If the preload was messed up there is a chance that the shock was damaged because of it so I would recommend doing a shock rebound test, either yourself or have a shop do it to verify the shocks aren't blown.
Also, if stiffer springs were added to the rear; that is likely why the shocks blew because if the spring rate is changed without changing the shock, it can cause the shock to prematurely blow because it isn't valved for the new spring rate.
Another reason is that the damping adjustment knob was overly turned clockwise – this is the hardest setting (Maximum Rebound). Our recommended damping adjustment is18 clicks counterclockwise, this is the mid-range setting and is the best starting point for adjusting your dampers. Turning past the last setting will damage the shock absorber.
Blown shocks would cause a flowy/bumpy ride because if they aren't working properly, any bumps in the road would be taken by the spring only rather than the shock and spring working in unison.
